Mary & Martha: What Exactly Was Mary Doing?

I love the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10: 38-42. I have been a Mary and a Martha at different times, so I relate to both women well.

Yesterday, however, for some reason, I saw a simplified meaning in the story.

We often hear the story about Mary and Martha and know that it is meant to teach us that sometimes other things are more important than “getting things done”.

I’m not sure that I’ve ever noticed EXACTLY what was more important than getting things done. I think I’ve heard this story so many times from many people, yet it has never been as clear to me as it was yesterday.

What was Mary doing that was the better part? It wasn’t that she was sitting around socializing, or giving the Savior attention, or being still and calm–although those are all good things and have their place in our lives.

No, the one thing she chose that was the better part appears to be that she was learning the word of God.

The one thing that we should choose, which is the better part (and more important than even serving or running around and getting things done) is to hear the Word.

“…Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.”
